Gloomhaven is a collaborative game in which players fight monsters and pursue their personal goals. The game is designed to be played as part of a campaign in which players will use the Book of Scenarios to link a series of adventures together, unlocking new content as the game progresses. Each scenario already revealed, however, can also be used as a self-contained gaming experience. You choose your hero from the six available initials. Each hero has a dedicated deck of cards and each card has an initiative value and two halves: a higher one, usually with an attack action, a lower one, usually with a move. But cards vary a lot from character to character and can contain spells, heals, buffs, defenses, support, etc.
At each round the players play two cards all together: one will use the upper half, the other the lower half, in the desired order. Also for each type of monster a card is revealed from a special pile and this card will define its initiative and behavior for the current round.
Each class has a unique set of abilities, so choosing a class is an important decision. When you first open the game box, the Brute, Inventor, Spellweaver, Rogue, Heart of Rock, and Mind Thief classes are available. Many other classes will be unlocked as the game progresses.
The narrative strands proceed parallel but somehow linked, intertwined in the fresco of a detailed world to be discovered, which is created as the players attach new stickers on the map, insert objects to the market, explore new paths. The legacy aspect is all in all negligible, it does not impact that much on the game and everything is then absolutely replayable (or resalable) once the campaign is over.
In campaign mode, players form an official group of characters and undertake a series of consecutive scenarios over the course of multiple game sessions. This allows players to follow a narrative thread as they make decisions and explore a path formed on their choices. A scenario can only be played in campaign mode if all global and group prerequisite achievements listed in the Scenario Book are active for the group. Also, once a scenario has been completed in campaign mode, it cannot be undertaken again in campaign mode by any other group.
it is strongly not recommended to undertake in self-conclusive mode a scenario that the group has not yet faced in campaign mode.
Hand management is very important and strategic, bringing out a "mixed" nature of the game that reflects American mechanics and German mechanics in what turns out to be a very varied and consistent game.
